Returning Lands in the Northern Sierra to the Washoe People
The Wášiw-šiw Land Trust, a land trust established by the Washoe Tribe, seeks to restore land in the Tribe’s vast Sierra Nevada homelands to the stewardship and care of the Washoe People. In January 2026, the Land Trust will acquire 10,274 acres in the homelands of the wélmeltiɁ (Northern Washoe People), the first of several Tribal-led conservation transactions currently underway. This historic initiative will ultimately return more than 20,000 acres to the Washoe People, who inhabited this area for thousands of years before they were forcibly displaced.
